This popular viewpoint provides not only a fine panorama of the Eildon Hills and the Tweed Valley, but also looks directly over the site, “almost enclosed by the winding of the River Tweed,” of Old Melrose. St Aidan founded a monastery and St Cuthbert was a monk there in the 7th century AD. Nothing of this monastery survives above ground, save for the earthen vallum or protective bank that once enclosed the monastic buildings. Please note that there is no public access to Old Melrose.
