Mungo Park (1771-1806) was born at Foulshiels, (6kms/ 4 miles) from Selkirk. Mungo became famous as an explorer of Africa, and in particular of the River Niger. This monument was erected in 1859 outside the former Municipal Buildings at the junction of High Street and Back Row. The Municipal Buildings were at one time the house where Mungo served as a surgeon's apprentice. |
