At Pennymuir the ramparts and entrances of two marching camps are particulary well preserved. They are a reminder of the many occasions that Roman invasion forces travelled the strategic road between the fortress of Eburacum (York) and Rome's northern outposts between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. The road itself can be followed from Pennymuir to Whitton Edge (and beyond as far as Maxton near St Boswells) as part of the Dere Street Walk. |
