This Abbey of Augustinian canons was founded by King David I and is still one of Scotland’s outstanding 12th century buildings. King Edward I of England stayed here and his soldiers took the roofing lead to help in the construction of their siege engines. The abbey, with the town, bore the brunt of English attacks in 1409, 1410, 1416, 1464, 1523, 1544, 1545 and was fortified by the French in 1548. |
