Heritage sites

Scottish Borders is an area of 4,600 km2 (1,800 miles2) and the Archaeology and Countryside Section of Scottish Borders Council holds records of more than 8,000 known archaeological sites, some of which date back several thousand years.

Although many of these sites are marked on Ordnance Survey maps, most are located on private land and are not open to the public. Even so, in and around each Borders town there are places where you can learn more about the history of the region by visiting the very site where things happened.
