Early Settlers in the Borders

by John Dent and Rory McDonald

Picture of the Early Settlers in the Borders book coverThe bedrock of the Scottish Borders was created over 400 million years ago on the floor of a long-vanished ocean, and given texture by volcanic eruptions which created the peaks so familiar today. Over the past 10,000 years the land has seen humans develop from bands of hunters, the landscape change from forest to open farmland and moor, the extinction of some species of wild life, and the introduction of others.

This book looks at the events and processes that shaped the land and its people in prehistoric times, during the period of Roman Britain, and up to the establishment of Dark Age kingdoms in southern Scotland.

Particular attention is paid to how and where people lived, and their relationship with the natural world.

Scottish Borders contains many places of exceptional interest and, to help the reader experience some of these, the text contains a list of sites with access arrangements.
