Before the Reformation it is likely that a teind barn existed near every parish church. The teind barn at Foulden is one of only two such structures that survive in Scotland. These barns were used to store the teinds – that tenth part or tithe of a person’s annual income or produce, which was owed to the church by ecclesiastical law. This was used to support the incumbent priest.
