History of site:

In the 18th century the parish of Castleton consisted of a series of scattered farms which the third Duke of Buccleuch reorganised into the planned village of Newcastleton in 1793. His purpose was to develop handloom weaving and by 1800 he had built 220 houses, many of which had a large front window to allow the maximum amount of light for weavers.
