History of site:

One of the most important features of any medieval burgh was the market place. A Selkirk was particularly important as it held the only weekly market in the county of Selkirkshire, every Wednesday. Many different commodities were traded in separate markets within the burgh, including fish, flesh and cheese. The flesh market, for instance, is said to have been situated a short distance to the east of the present market place. Today, the Market Place remains the bustling centre of the town and the square Pant Well (built 1898) still marks the commercial centre of the medieval burgh.
