About Us
This website is one of the products of a Heritage Interpretation Programme which was specifically designed to develop public interest in, and awareness of, the historic Scottish Borders through the development of informative publications and greater access to historic sites. The Programme began in October 1995, but grew in scope to embrace several discrete projects.
The publications generated by the Programme have been the work of Scottish Borders Council staff, with a wider partnership taking forward the development of site access and interpretation.
In addition to this website the products generated by the Programme include:
- 5 published books on aspects of Borders history and archaeology,
- 11 leaflets describing local heritage in and around Borders communities,
- 3 major viewpoints developed in public forests beside the River Tweed,
- 30 secondary sites identified across the region and provided with on-site information.
Please visit the publications section for further information on the books available to buy.
Scottish Borders Council took the lead role, with Scottish Natural Heritage and the European Regional Development Fund providing invaluable support to all the projects. Forest Enterprise became a major partner through development of the historic interest of the publicly owned forests in Tweeddale. Scottish Enterprise Borders, Scottish Borders Tourist Board and Trimontium Trust also contributed to the success of the Programme.
